At the beginning of this year, my husband and I started our own version of binge-watching certain TV shows. We’re still not like most people who watch several episodes one right after the other, but we do escalate our viewing from one episode of a particular show once every few weeks (We watch a lot of shows, typically about one per night, and that’s as often as we can get around to them, so we’re always perpetually behind.) to watching at least a couple of episodes each week. We started with Mr. Robot, because the hubs had been complaining that his geek friends were making fun of him for never having seen it, so I bought him Season 1 as a Christmas gift. After we caught up on that and were waiting for new episodes to be released, he left it up to me to choose the next show we would “binge watch.” |

TV Tuesday - The Voice Part 2

About a month ago, I blogged about my surprising connection to one of The Voice artists this season. (If you missed it, you can catch up here.) His name is Josh West, and he’s fast becoming famous as much for his hair as his talent.:-) I’m happy to say that not only did he get that 4-chair turn on the blind auditions, but he’s now made it through both the Battle Round and the Knock-Out Round of the competition. It’s been a long wait in between his performances, and sadly his Battle Round got montaged, although The Voice did finally post the full performance on YouTube. So last nights Knock-Out Round was the first time I’d really seen him on TV in weeks.

TV Tuesday - The Voice

Until the current season (12), I hadn’t ever watched The Voice. When it debuted back in 2011, I guess I didn’t take much notice. I thought it was just another American Idol type show, and while I never really watched Idol either, what I heard about it through the grapevine didn’t really make me want to watch it. I know that a number of stars were born from the show, who’ve gone on to have very successful music careers, which is awesome. But what really bothered me about the show is the judges’ (mainly Simon Cowell’s) cutting remarks, which often seemed unnecessarily cruel. I didn’t have to be a fan of the show to hear about stuff like that, and watching singers, whether they had genuine talent or not, being humiliated on national television held no appeal for me at all. So when The Voice came along, I simply wrote it off, thinking it was probably more of the same.

TV Tuesday -- Marvel's Agent Carter

Always perpetually behind on my TV watching, I just last week finished Season 1 of Marvel's Agent Carter. What an awesome show! If you're looking for a show with a strong female lead, you can't go wrong with this one. Peggy Carter is a woman who knows how to be a lady, but is also a soldier through and through, who can go toe-to-toe with the nastiest villains in the world. She's no shrinking violet, needing to be rescued. In fact, she's often the one saving the men around her, even though she rarely receives any recognition for it. On the contrary, she lives in a male-dominated era, where she can scarcely get a foothold to prove herself. Steve Rogers aka Captain America was one of the few men who ever treated her as an equal and recognized her true worth, and I think that's one of the reasons losing him was such a devastating blow to her. |

TV Tuesday -- The Science of Sex Appeal (How It Relates to Writing Romance)

There were several shows I watched this week that tempted me to write about them, but none more so than the Discovery channel documentary that I viewed on Netflix called, The Science of Sex Appeal. As I mention in my bio, another of my hobbies is feeding my insatiable thirst for knowledge, and this particular show did that while also appealing to the romantic in me. I was quite fascinated by the information presented in this show, but I'll start by prefacing that it focuses only on heterosexual relationships and the biological responses that drive us to seek mates. That said, I still found it very intriguing how our bodies and our brains are constantly making calculations about the opposite sex of which we are mostly unaware.

TV Tuesday -- Firefly

Another wonderful storytelling medium and one of my other big hobbies is television. Once I find shows and characters I like, I just can't get enough of them. I probably watch way too many TV shows, which is why, much like with movies, I'm rarely up to date on any of them. With the popularity and availability of TV on DVD and Netflix, I also enjoy rewatching old favorites and discovering new-to-me shows as well. My apologies in advance for potentially discussing a particular show or episode my readers may have watched a long time ago, but if I tried to stay up to date on all the shows I love, I'd never have time for writing. Not to mention, perhaps I can stir up some fond memories for you or help you discover a show you've never seen before (in the event that might be the case, I'll try not to be too spoilerish).
